With a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, Dr. Andy’s career spans from geophysicist work for Exxon and the co-founding of Landmark Graphics to starting Antares Audio Technologies, where he invented Auto-Tune. In this talk, Dr. Andy will be interviewed by historian of sound studies Trevor Pinch of Cornell University about his inventive life. The interview will be which will be followed by audience questions.
This is the second year of the David H. Horowitz Music Innovation series program, which focuses on the creative and innovative nature of music in various formats. It is supported through Susan Horowitz and the David Horowitz Endowment Fund of the Foundation to support Lemelson Center programs related to creative and innovative music.
During his profession, David H. Horowitz significantly encouraged creativity in the media and entertainment industries. Following his stint as general counsel at Screen Gems and then Columbia Pictures before taking over the management of the music and cable section at Warner Communications as a member of the office headed by the President. In this capacity, he aided in introducing a new cable channel called Music Television, better known as MTV, and was later the first CEO of MTV.

Andy began his work at Exxon in 1976 in the Department of Production Research, where he conducted seismic data processing research. Four years later, Andy decided to create his own business called Landmark Graphics which was the first standalone seismic data interpretation software.
In 1989 He was involved in the geophysical field and concentrated on signal processing techniques that could utilize audio signals to map beneath the earth’s surface. It was a massive opportunity as using sound waves could allow locating oil beneath that surface.
After 1989, Andy began to pursue a degree in music composition. The following year, he founded Jupiter Systems, a software application designed to help musicians. As he worked on his project, Andy started using digital signal processing techniques to develop looping techniques for digital music sampling.
While his work continued, Andy succeeded in developing Multiband Dynamics Tool(MDT), which was later followed by two more Pro Tools plug-ins like, JVP and SST. However, his invention in 1997 Auto-Tune was a groundbreaking musical moment. The first ever song released using Autotune was the track known as Believe by 1998’s Cher. Since then, many musicians have used the program to make their tracks.
